- Seeking Disaster Information for Schools
-
- Through my volunteer organization, The Greater Victoria School Board Emergency
- Preparedness Steering Committee, I am publishing a quarterly emergency
- preparedness newsletter for British Columbia schools. I am finding it
- difficult sourcing disaster information concerning schools, especially real
- case scenarios with photos. If anyone can be of assistance I would appreciate
- hearing from you.

- Seeking Information on Evacuations for Chemical Emergencies
-
- In connection with a course we teach on math modeling in environmental
- management, I would like to have an idea of the number of evacuations of
- different sizes in recent years in the U.S. as a result of chemical spills,
- fires, or related incidents, as well as brief summaries of the most
- spectacular. Information directing me to any statistical summaries would be
- useful. Thanks.

- Information Available on Flood Recovery at Midwest Universities
-
- An article in the fall 1993 edition of Facilities Managers magazine details
- how Iowa State University used the Internet to get advice on cleaning up the
- mess left by the flood this summer and dealing with FEMA (Federal Emergency
- Mangement Agency) and contractors. Having an Internet connection also helped
- the University of Kansas provide a quick response to a different emergency.
-
- If you would like the full text of this article, written by me, Jayne Levin,
- editor of The Internet Letter, please e-mail me at netweek@access.digex.net,
- and I will send you the article.

- Job Opening at UNT
-
- The Department of Public Administration and Institute for Emergency
- Administration and Planning at the University of North Texas are seeking
- applications for a tenure-track position in public administration at the
- assistant professor level to begin September 1, 1994. Preference will be given
- to candidates with a terminal degree and demonstrated research interest in
- emergency planning and administration. ABDs nearing completion of their degree
- will be considered. Degrees need not be in Public Administration; related
- disciplines will be considered. Candidates should submit a letter of
- application, curriculum vitae, and the names of three references by December
- 1, 1993; however applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
- Appplications should be mailed to Bob Bland, Chair, Department of Public
- Administration, P.O. Box 13136, Denton, TX 76203-6176. For more information,
- contact Dave Neal, Institute for Emergency Administration and Plannning,
- (817) 565-4267; e-mail: Neal@SCS.UNT.EDU.

- Announcing EMED-L
-
- EMED-L is an electronic mailing list for health care professionals in
- emergency medicine. The list functions as an automatic mail/distribution
- system for the exchange of information and issues relating to a particular
- subject - in this case - emergency medicine. As a member of the list you will
- be able to pose questions or opinions that will automatically be distributed
- to all other members of the list. As the list grows, you will be able to
- seemlessly communicate with members throughout the country - if not the world.
-
- To subscribe to the list send an e-mail message to majordomo@itsa.ucsf.edu
- Leave the subject area blank (it will be ignored anyway). In the body of the
- message just type the following:
-
- subscribe emed-l@itsa.ucsf.edu <email-address>
-
- where <email-address> is your email address.
-
- That's all. If you have a signature automatically appended to your email you
- may get a notice back that majordomo doesn't recognize your signature as a
- command. If you can, turn off your signature for this message. Any questions?
- Drop me a line. Spread the word. Emergency Medicine is one of the only medical
- specialties utilizing the internet in this way. This list is sponsored by the
- Emergency Medicine group at UCSF. All questions pertaining to the list should
- be forwarded to cbarton@itsa.ucsf.edu (Chris Barton).

- Concerned about RF Microwave Radiation?
-
- [Received the following from Vitor@dsif.fee.unicamp.br:]
-
- Brazil is installing a large scale program on cellular personal communication
- without any discussion on its potential hazards in exposing the population to
- RF microwaves. They are injuring our National Constitution since there is a
- law that any large-scale program should be preceded by a ecological study made
- by brazilian and invited foreign scientists. Also this study must be made
- public. They have done nothing!
-
- The frequency used is 900 MHz, but will be changed to 1.8 GHz in the future.
- Europe is using 450 MHz. The telephone companies are not taking any care of
- excessive radiation and they are following 1950 American specifications.
-
- If you have any information about potential hazards, please reply. Thank You
- very much for your cooperation.

- Call for Contributions to Loma Prieta Papers
-
- The four-volume NEHRP (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program) Report
- to Congress describing the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake is now being finalized.
- The report is intended to be the reference archival document for this
- disaster. Abstracts are being sought from professional engineers and
- architects, researchers, government officials, and owners of structures for
- the third volume, "Performance of Man-Made Structures." Brief descriptions of
- proposed papers should be sent as soon as possible to Stephen Mahin, Editor,
- or Guillermo Santana, Volume Coordinator, NEHRP Volume on Performance of
- Man-Made Structures, c/o Earthquake Engineering Research Center (EERC),
- University of California at Berkeley, 1301 South 46th Street, Richmond, CA
- 94804, (510) 231-5628; fax: (510) 231-9471. The section on lifelines is being
- prepared by Anshell Schiff, and abstracts on lifeline issues should be sent to
- him at 27750 Edgerton Road, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022, (415) 941-9233.
-
- 8)----------
- Speaking of the EERC . . .
- Developing Performance-Based Seismic Design Standards
-
- The Earthquake Engineering Research Center (EERC) at the University of
- California at Berkeley has been awarded a contract from the Federal Emergency
- Management Agency to investigate user needs and develop a plan of action for a
- future "Problem Focused Study" project. The project will identify issues
- related to seismic performance characteristics and performance-based design
- for new and existing construction. To foster national involvement in these
- issues, EERC will seek input from experts around the country. A "User Needs
- Colloquium" will be organized for spring 1994, bringing together
- representatives from the differenct disciplines involved. For
- more information contact Dr. Andrew S. Whittaker, Associate Director, EERC,
- University of California at Berkeley, 1301 South 46th Street, Richmond, CA
- 94804-4698, (510) 231-9554; fax: (510) 231-9471; e-mail: admin@eerc.
